Movies

I still take black-and-white photos. For the cinema, however, virtually no black-and-white films are produced today. In the 1960s, color film was established, and today's moviegoers expect not only rich colors, but also 3D effects.

Art focus

In photography, a completely different development can be observed: Here, the focus of many photographers' art was black-and-white photography for many years, although color photography had long been technically possible.

Do I look better in black and white? Many people think so. A view that I, as a black-and-white photographer for Lucerne, Zug and Schwyz, like to take into account: a black-and-white photo can develop its own artistic touch.

Unrealistic

But where does the idea come from that a black and white photo could make one's portrait even more beautiful? Well, the removal of colors creates an image that is a little further from reality than the color photo.

Aim of the art

And the objective of art is not necessarily to depict reality. Art can also create a whole new interpretation of reality. And for this, black and white photography can be an interesting technique.

Grayscale and the postprocessing

It is not uncommon for a color image to be produced first, even if the final product is to be a black-and-white photo. The conversion to grayscale is then done in post-processing.

A color image as a basis also offers more possibilities for optimizing the image values. In digital times, the "black-and-white film" doesn't really exist anymore. And yet, with the right settings for exposure and contrast, you can create exactly the look you want for a black-and-white photo.
